چکیده

Do you have any regrets or bugbears? Like many others I regret not knowing more maths. Although perhaps I should be careful what I wish for, as being more mathematically-savvy might prevent the occasional leaps of faith that make the naturalistic aspects of my research exciting. Bugbears: there’s definitely a few, but for brevity’s sake I’ll mention just two. Like everyone else, I find the peer-review process frustrating and imperfect, but I don’t have a credible alternative to offer. Another frustration is the media. I’m fortunate that my work engages the interest of the general public and the media are a crucial conduit in this process. However, I sometimes feel a bit like an aging rock singer, I’m singing new songs, but the media only want to hear the old tunes — invariably about London taxi drivers. I get a lot of media inquiries and many of them are lazy, unimaginative, and looking to sensationalise. Of course this isn’t true across the board and some science journalists are well-informed and ask important questions of academia, science and scientists. It is vital that science and the media engage, but both sides have some way to go in making it a more fulfilling and productive relationship.

It was Sir Rumbold who, a quarter of a century before, staggered humanity by the declaration that a certain portion of Man's intestine was not only useless, but definitely harmful.... Since then he had kept well to the front, successfully introducing to the nation bran food, Youghourt,...

An Algebraic Solution for the Kermack-McKendrick Model

We present an algebraic solution for the Susceptible-Infective-Removed (SIR) model originally presented by Kermack-McKendrick in 1927. Starting from the differential equation for the removed subjects presented by them in the original paper, we re-write it in a slightly different form in order to derive a formal solution, unless one integration. Then, using algebraic techniques and some well jus...

Tannic Acid in the Treatment of Burns

To ilic Editor, The Indian Medical Gazette. Sir,?During the past few years, tannic acid has come into considerable vogue for the treatment of burns. As House Surgeon in the Sir J. J. Hospital in Bombay in 1927-28 I had to treat many cases of burns, but was unsuccessful with tannic acid. I asked my chief, Mr. S. R. Moolgavkar, f.r.c.s., as to the reason for this, and he gave me the following adv...
